Taverns and inns
Build a tavern as they stood all over the world: a half-timbered inn with a hanging sign, an English coaching inn with galleries, a vaulted wine cellar, an Irish pub with snugs, a Wild West saloon, a Bavarian beer hall, a Greek taverna or a Japanese izakaya. With a bar, barrels, tables and a fireplace inside. Below you can see how everything is calculated.
Point at a block for the explanation. Click a block to mark it as placed. The side view shows the section at the chosen column, Layer shows the chosen layer from above.

Build tips
- A tavern stood where travellers passed: on a road, by a bridge, at a harbour or on the square. Put yours in such a place in your world.
- Give your tavern a name and put it on the hanging sign or the front, as real taverns did: The Golden Lion, The Red Lion, Zum Riesen.

History and fun facts
Inns along the road
As long as there have been travellers, there have been inns: a place to eat, drink and sleep, with a stable for the horse. Because many people could not read, a hanging sign with a picture hung above the door: a lion, a crown or a horse.
St. Peter Stiftskeller in Salzburg is already mentioned in 803 and counts as one of the oldest eating places in Europe that still exist.
Germany and the Alps
The inn Zum Riesen in Miltenberg is first mentioned in 1411. The tall half-timbered house that stands there now was built in 1590. Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig is a wine cellar that Goethe made famous in his Faust.
In Austria, wine growers have been allowed to serve their own wine since a decree of Emperor Joseph II from 1784. A bunch of pine branches above the door shows that the heuriger is open.
Coaching inns in England
Along the great roads the stagecoaches stopped at coaching inns. Through a gateway the coach drove into a courtyard; the rooms opened onto wooden galleries above the yard. The George Inn in London is the last of those galleried inns in the city.
Irish pubs
Sean's Bar in Athlone says it has been an inn since around the year 900; during a renovation walls of woven wattle from that time were found. In the towns, pubs got a painted wooden front with the name in gold letters.
Inside, guests sat in snugs: wooden booths where you could drink unseen. The Crown Liquor Saloon in Belfast, an inn from 1826 that got its name and its rich interior in 1885, still has ten of them.
Cafés in the Low Countries
In Amsterdam and Bruges the taverns were in ordinary houses on the canal: the café downstairs, the family upstairs. Café Vlissinghe in Bruges is already mentioned in 1515. In 't Aepjen in Amsterdam is in one of the last wooden houses of the city, from around 1550.
From Stockholm to Madrid
Den Gyldene Freden in Stockholm has been open since 1722, in a house in the old town with vaulted cellars; it now belongs to the Swedish Academy. Sobrino de Botín in Madrid has existed since 1725 and is listed by Guinness as the oldest restaurant that has always stayed open. In Bologna stands Osteria del Sole, where for centuries you have brought your own food and only bought the wine.
All over the world
In Korea, travellers rested at the jumak, an inn with a thatched roof that people came to mostly for the drink; there were many of them in the time of the Joseon dynasty. In Japan people sat in the izakaya, with lanterns under the eaves.
In America, the White Horse Tavern in Newport has been a tavern since 1673. In the Wild West, people built saloons with a tall straight front, so that a simple wooden shed looked grand from the street.
Did you know?
- The word pub comes from public house: a house that is open to everyone.
- A hanging sign was the first advertising sign: you recognised the inn without being able to read.
- In Minecraft you can put text on both sides of a hanging sign.
- A snug often had a little hatch to the bar, so you could order without being seen.
About this tool
With this Minecraft tavern generator you build an inn, pub or tavern from eleven traditions: a half-timbered inn, a coaching inn with galleries, a cellar tavern, a village inn with a thatched roof, a café in a gabled house, a beer hall, a saloon, an izakaya or teahouse, an Irish town pub, an Irish country pub and a taverna with a pergola.
You choose the size, the roof, half-timbering or a painted front, a hanging sign, a pine bush or noren, and what comes around it: a veranda, a courtyard with galleries, a vaulted cellar, a stable, a garden, a pergola or a pond with a zigzag bridge. Inside come a bar, barrels, tables and a fireplace. Thirty-seven examples from more than twenty countries help you start.
The tool counts all blocks, with a build plan per layer, a 3D preview and a .schem download. This way you build a medieval tavern or pub in Minecraft. For the houses around it there is Timber-framed houses, for the street Lanterns and street decor.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a table in Minecraft?
Place a fence and put a pressure plate on it. Put stairs next to it as chairs, with the low side toward the table. For a long table, place a row of fences with pressure plates.
How do I make a hanging sign?
Hanging signs exist from Minecraft 1.20. Click a sign on the side of a wall block and it hangs from a bar out of the wall. You can put text on both sides.
What is a snug?
A snug is a wooden booth in an Irish pub, with a bench and a little table, where you could sit unseen. Turn on the interior for an Irish town pub and snugs appear along the wall.
Can I build this in Bedrock?
Yes. The front view and the build plan per layer work in every version. The .schem file is for Java Edition with WorldEdit or Litematica.
